World of Warcraft (or WoW) is officially inaccessible to players in Iran, without refund or warning. The Iranian government has restricted games from its citizens, and Blizzard Entertainment aren’t able to speak about any details regarding their motives. World of Warcraft isn’t particularly violent and it’s certainly not sexually explicit – why have Iranian players had their accounts made inaccessible?

Wasteland 2 is Kickstart-ed Into The Millions

charalanahzard-games:

Whoever said Steam sales would completely empty pockets was massively misinformed – there’s something else that’s taking all the money, and for good reason. A sequel is finally being made to a game that can boast about its mention in countless ‘Top 25 PC Games Ever’ charts, and the development has been entirely funded by Kickstart. Almost 3 million dollars has been raised by just over 60,000 backers for inXile Entertainment to finish the development of Wasteland 2.

Game Sales Weaken As Gamers Turn To Alternative Entertainment
Gamasutra has posted a relatively controversial article citing an industry analyst firm that states April 2012’s sales continue a decline in overall video game sales, a trend that has been purported for the past few years.
The study claims Mass Effect 3 was one of the top selling games of April 2012, followed by Prototype 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles. While these best sellers may sound like good news, the firm points out that sales compared to last April will likely be nowhere close to each other, with 2012’s being sharply smaller. The firm also predicts that besides Max Payne 3 coming out this month, May will be an even slower seller.
PiperJaffray, the analyst firm predicting these trends, claims that more gamers are turning away from the nickel-and-diming process companies such as EA and Capcom have have been doing when already charging for “premium goods” and instead been turning to more social media with free-to-play services or games more easily played with a network of friends.
The report also noted the longstanding sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 have been “disappointing” in comparison to 2010’s Black Ops.

With NPD’s data for April due to be released on May 10, PiperJaffray’s Michael Olson and Andrew Connor also expect video game sales to be down in May year-over-year, due to “thinning sell-through tails,” although the decline will be offset by strong sales of Take-Two and Rockstar’s Max Payne 3.
…
The analysts estimate that during April, Activision saw a modest increase in U.S. retail sales sales year-over-year during April, thanks to the launch of Prototype 2. However, the month also saw “weak Modern Warfare 3 demand,” say the reports, indicating “a significant shortfall compared toBlack Ops in the same period last year.”
Forecasting U.S. game retail for May, Olson and Connor believe that Take-Two and Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 will outsell Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future, Dragon’s Dogma and Sniper Elite V2combined. The analyst report focuses on console games, and did not include projections for Blizzard’s highly-anticipated May PC release, Diablo III.

Perhaps this report is a sign that the industry needs a change from its current model?

Well no fucking shit, sherlock. Here’s a hint:
No Day 1 DLC
Quit rehashing the same shit like its Madden, give us some original IPs
Sell me shit with a demo, not with a multi-million dollar live action commericial
DON’T CHARGE $60 GODDAMN DOLLARS.
I know no one wants to hear that, but it’s true. Call me a poorfag all you want, but $60 per game is, for a lot of people, a stupidly high cost of entry. A Blu-ray DVD doesn’t cost that much.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s been some awesome DLC, but it has to be done right. DLC shouldn’t be required to get the full enjoyment from a game, it should add replayability to a game that’s been out for some time. The best examples that come to mind are Fallout: New Vegas and Red Dead Redemption. You could play either of those games from start to finish without a lick of DLC, and enjoy yourself completely. The new stuff gives you a reason to come back.

Jet Set Radio HD Rerelease includes new features, may not have a few original tracks
Going along with an ongoing custom graffiti contest (which will include 18 new pieces of graffiti picked from competitors in the contest), some new areas include Batam Street and Grind Square in the NA version coming out for PSN and XBLA. If you’re unfamiliar with the original Dreamcast game, the point of the game is that you skate around colorful environments trying to graffiti up the landscape while officiers in SWAT gear attempt to hugtackle you to death.
The bad news with the new announcement, however, is that Jurassic 5 and Rob Zombie music may not appear in the game. SEGA has stated that though, as of right now, 70% of the original music has already been secured, it’s been difficult for the company to track down some copyrights which have changed hands (seemingly numerous times) since the original game’s release. Most of the game’s original soundtrack seems to have pulled through, though!
No official release date has been mentioned just yet, but SEGA is still pinning a “Summer 2012” release schedule for the remastered game.

Kickstarter Helps Wasteland 2 Become Reality
Brian Fargo was the Executive Producer for the original Wasteland, a post-apocalyptic RPG created in 1988, which was the spiritual prequel to the original Fallout. It was a trendsetter in how RPGs were played. It was also the first post-apocalyptic RPG of its kind, as well as the first RPG to give the player true consequences within the storyline for their decisions. So it should probably come as no surprise that Brian Fargo and his team have already surpassed their goal in only 2 days after their kickstarter went live.Brian Fargo insists Wasteland 2 will not fall into any of the remake traps that have been seen by the Likes of Fallout, X-com, or Syndicate. Brian wants this to be a proper sequel;

We’re going back to the original and building from there. No first person shooter, we’re going top down so you get a tactical feel for the situation. And we’re not ditching the party play to turn it into some hack-and-slash bloodfest. It’s turn based, tactical, with a storyline that will be deeper and broader.

This is something some publishers just couldn’t grasp (watch the hilarious video on kickstarter) but that fans very dearly wanted, and when the fans spoke, they did so with their wallets.

Record PC Game Sales

gaminggopher:

The PC Game Alliance was originally announced back in 2008 at the Game Developer’s Conference. The PC Game Alliance consists of many well known gaming and computer companies, such as AMD, Capcom, Epic Games, Razer and more, are putting out reports about how alive the PC community is and how much it has been growing.

Here are some excerpts of how well the industry is doing:

The global PC games market continues to show surprisingly strong growth in 2011, reaching a record US$18.6 billion, representing overall growth of 15% over 2010.

the mature game markets of Korea, Japan, U.S., U.K., and Germany demonstrated significant growth in 2011, together recording increased revenue of 11% in 2011 to US$8 billion.

I just recently got my own PC for gaming, prior, I was but a console gamer, and let me tell you, it is a lot of fun!  I can see why it is such a strong and growing portion of the gaming industry.
